I've decided to try out Bluesky again since it's gotten so much media attention lately. For some context, I've been off Twitter entirely since its rebrand to X, and I'd been slowly falling off of it prior to that since Musk bought it. We all knew it'd be on a downward slope at that point, and it's fallen far down that slope indeed.
Mostly, the fediverse has been a suitable replacement for me. I enjoy my time there a lot more than I ever did on Twitter, and have no plans to stop using it. But there was a fairly large group of local people that never made the jump to the fediverse, and I mostly fell out of touch with them as a result.
From admittedly a very short period of time, enough of them seem to have made the jump to Bluesky at this point that it feels like those social networks are beginning to reform over there. I haven't dug into Bluesky's decentralization claims in too much detail yet, and there do seem to be some concerns about some of the components being centralized (seemingly mostly as an indirect consequence of its design rather than a direct business decision). But it's better/more open than post-Musk Twitter, and I'm glad it's around.
It won't be the social media platform for me, but honestly I think it's probably best for there not to be one big social media platform. Let's try things and see what works. :)
